The return of Sampad's hugely popular taxi tour around Stratford Road, Birmingham as part of the legacy of its major community heritage project, My Route.
Back by popular demand!
My Route was a major community heritage project, delivered by Sampad during 2014-15. It explored the changing history of Stratford Road – one of Birmingham’s busiest and best-known thoroughfares. The project was supported by the National Lottery through the Heritage Lottery Fund.
Working with local residents, My Route identified how the population, landscape and culture around Stratford Road has evolved from the 1940s to the present day, with the settlement and migration of new communities. A far-reaching investigation looked at the influence of these communities on the faiths, trades, food, language and architecture of this now buzzing and diverse city quarter.
Members of the public also had a chance to get involved in My Route and learn more about the story of the area through a series of lively arts and culture activities.
One of the runaway successes was a free taxi tour which took place during Summer 2014. The tours brought local history vividly to life with a 1970s-styled taxi taking visitors on a trip down memory lane with sensory props, music and audio of personal anecdotes from residents past and present immersing passengers in the sights, sounds and memories of the Road. At the end of the tour participants had a special chance to sample some of the delicious food available at Al Faisal’s restaurant, in the heart of the Balti Triangle. The tours proved a hit with people of all ages, to the point that all eighteen tours were sold out!
Now, thanks to additional funding from the Sir Barry Jackson Trust, Sampad is delighted to announce that the free My Route Taxi Tours will be running again this August! Tours will take place on the dates shown below. PLEASE NOTE:
