Sidelines to Centre Stage

Midlands Arts Centre, Hexagon Theatre

A project and showcase of creative writing produced by women who have survived extreme life experiences.

Sidelines to Centre Stage by Abda Khan is a showcase of creative writing produced by women who have survived extreme life experiences.

Abda has worked with members of Birmingham and Solihull Women’s Aid refuges, and with women assisted by the Muslim Women in Prison Project in Bradford. Through a series of creative writing workshops, the women have produced work that articulates their challenging and wide-ranging life experiences from domestic violence to homelessness love, loss and hope.

Out of these workshops a performed reading ‘To Whom it May Concern’ has been directed and produced, by Sampad and Trina Haldar, to draw some of these powerful writings together, performed by actors, telling the women’s gripping and moving stories. This unique journey unearths the hidden stories of incredibly brave women.

WATCH: Three Words and Guilt a short film created in July 2019 from two of the pieces created during Sidelines to Centre Stage.

Project Director: Abda Khan

Showcase Director: Trina Halder (Mashi Theatre)
