An intimate evening of classical dance and music.

(Please note that this is an external event listing)

Born and raised in the UK Seeta Patel has been championing the Indian classical dance style of Bharatanatyam for many years.

She has done so while forging a distinctive career in contemporary dance; performing with companies including DV8 Physical Theatre, presenting work at Southbank Centre and Sadler’s Wells and acting as a mentor in the South Asian finals for BBC Young Dancer 2015.

Under the guidance of her teacher, the remarkable dancer Mavin Khoo, she has become a growing voice for the form, highlighting its relevance and value in the field of dance and classical arts today.

Originally created for the Wild Card at Sadler’s Wells and selling out two nights to critical acclaim, Seeta presents an intimate and rich evening of classical dance and music from South India, featuring an ensemble of exquisite Carnatic musicians.

Something Then, Something Now, like so many Bharatanatyam works, is a story of love in separation. The performance is much more than a dance of devotion: it shows a mortal contemplating union with a god — both physical and spiritual — a consummation both human and divine.

The result echoes our own attempts to connect with others emotionally, and also reminds us of the timelessness of this process, and the spiritual union to which it ultimately relates.

The performance leads the audience through the nuances of expression and technical excellence of this beautiful classical art form through Patel’s interpretation.

With Something Then, Something Now, Seeta presents Bharatanatyam in a fresh and contemporary way, while raising the bar for presentation and artistry.

110 mins (including 20 min interval)

This production is also touring to Pavilion Dance South West, in Bournemouth, on 7 October 2015. Please see www.pdsw.org.uk for further details.
