Winners of NAVADAL 2017 announced!

On Saturday 15 July, a host of rising stars in the field of South Asian dance took to the stage at Birmingham Hippodrome for NAVADAL,  Akademi’s national South Asian youth dance competition, which was run in partnership this year with One Dance UK, ISTD and Sampad as part of U.Dance 2017.

NAVADAL (meaning ‘new shoots’) aims to discover and celebrate new South Asian dance talent. This year’s competition showcased the exceptional talents of fourteen soloists and four groups who delivered captivating performances of classical Indian dance styles in an atmosphere of buzzing excitement!

Hosted by the ever-effervescent Shane Shambhu, the five expert judges, who included Sampad’s own Piali Ray OBE, along with Andrew Hurst (Chief Executive, One Dance UK), Pali Chandra (Dancer and Dance Educator), Archita Kumar (Independent Dance Artist) and Kamala Devam (Independent Dance Artist) had the demanding task of selecting winners and runners-up across four categories.

The exciting prizes up for grabs this year included a One Dance UK membership and the opportunity to perform at Southbank Centre‘s Alchemy Festival 2018.

Congratulations to everyone who took part!
