Widely considered as the original superstar of Indian cinema, he had 15 consecutive solo hit films in the 1970s; a record that remains as yet unbroken.
Music contributed enormously to his stardom, due to his successful association with singer Kishore Kumar and composer RD Burman.
The trio churned out evergreen hits like Kuch to log kahenge and Ye shaam mastani and established the golden era of Hindi film music.
