Chai and Chat
After the success of our first ever Chai and Chat in October 2018, we have more events lined up for Spring 2019!
Chai and Chat is a new series of informal discussion sessions where women come together and share their creative thoughts and ideas.
We invite you to take part in an afternoon of relaxed conversation over a cup of delicious Chai tea. Meet like minded creative people and share your ideas.
This event will be held at the Ikon Gallery in Birmingham and will be hosted by Shaista Chisthy. Shaista is a London based Documentary Photographer & Visual Artist exploring identity, representation and notions of ‘otherness’, particularly of Muslims in Britain. Shai uses news and mainstream media along with humour to challenge narratives which often serve to de-humanise, over simplify and reinforce a ‘them and us’ in society.
Shai began her career working with NGOs on humanitarian projects with global organisations including Christian Aid, CARE International and Islamic Relief. More recently she has been transitioning her practice to explore complex issues relating to her own identity as a British Muslim woman of Pakistani heritage. Shai has been developing her conceptual practice experimenting with other forms, transitioning away from photojournalistic work.
Shai is particularly interested in the impact of development work on women and has collaborated with UN Women on projects such the ‘International Day of the Girl’ and the prevention of human trafficking in India. Shai’s work has been published internationally – most notably her work covering the 2014 Afghan elections. Her work on drug rehabilitation received an honourable mention in the 2013 Magenta Flash Forward Award and her work on the internally displaced in Afghanistan received an honourable mention in the International Photography Awards 2016. More recently Shai was shortlisted for D&AD’s Next Photographer Award and has exhibited works across London, Pakistan, Brighton and Hull throughout 2018.
Please NOTE: Chai and Chat is a initiative for people who identify as women to create a safe environment to share ideas, however this event is open to all at IKON.
Chai and Chat is a women’s event as part of Sakshi a new strand of Sampad South Asian Arts and Heritage projects that focus on women and girls and encourage them to get their voices heard through creative projects in the arts.
