Internationally renowned dancer and choreographer Daksha Sheth brings her new show Sari to MAC, celebrating a form of clothing that is intrinsically entwined with Indian culture.
India’s tradition of handwoven textiles, with its incredible range of colour, texture and design has been one the most visually striking elements of the Indian identity for thousands of years. The sari continues to be the jewel of the Indian handloom industry forming the quintessential expression of the weavers’ imagination, talent and skill.
This visually stunning show, which bridges the gap between contemporary and traditional Indian dance, was conceived to highlight the playfulness and individuality of the sari – highlighting the stages in its journey, from cotton pod to magnificent fabric draped in a range of distinctive, individual wearing styles.
There will be a special FREE performance of striking dance from South India before the performance of Sari on Sunday afternoon.
Striking Kathakali, Kathak and Yakshagana performers convey dramatic stories from Indian mythology, through traditional dance forms originating from India’s southern states. Click here to see more information.
