UBUNTU: What Is It?

Ubuntu is often translated as “humanity towards others.” It speaks to the belief that we become ourselves through one another – that community, empathy and mutual respect are essential to who we are.

In 2026, this idea takes physical form as Tribhangi Dance Theatre bring their acclaimed production UBUNTU on tour across the UK, with performances in Birmingham, Solihull and Leeds – uniting audiences through movement.

What Is Ubuntu?

Ubuntu is a philosophy originating from the Proto-Bantu language but has many names across African languages. Although there are many, often nuanced definitions of Ubuntu, it is often summarised as “I am because we are.” It is a way of understanding humanity through connection, compassion and shared existence.

In a time when the world can feel fragmented, Ubuntu offers a hopeful counterpoint: a reminder that connection is our greatest strength. This philosophy sits at the very heart of Tribhangi Dance Theatre’s work, where collaboration and cultural exchange are not just themes, but lived practice.

Hailing from Johannesburg, South Africa, the award-winning Tribhangi Dance Theatre are renowned for their bold and innovative choreography. In UBUNTU, they blend the strength and vitality of African dance with the grace, rhythm and precision of classical Indian Bharatanatyam.

Through dance, UBUNTU invites us to reflect on how cultures can meet without losing themselves. How difference can create harmony rather than division.

The 2026 tour places Birmingham at its heart while extending the philosophy of Ubuntu to audiences across the UK.

Alongside theatre performances, the tour will also visit schools and community groups, offering performances and workshops that bring the spirit of Ubuntu directly to young people.
