This term, Sampad’s artists have been busy delivering a varied range of sessions for our Associate Schools. Our most popular workshops this term were themed around Islamic art.
We worked with three Artists, each of whom brought their professional expertise into the classroom. They shared how Islamic Art and Architecture influenced their work. Students explored different printing methods, some designed hessian bags, and one school learnt about henna traditions from around the world. To celebrate Eid, we looked at creating Eid cards that children could share with friends and family.
We were delighted to work with printmaker and illustrator Haseebah Ali as one of our artists for the project. She reflected on her experience delivering sessions in one school:
“All the students seem to really be engaged in the workshop, with Muslim students being vocal on the facts they already knew about Eid. There was a sense that they felt empowered when having a chance to share knowledge on aspects of their religion.
There was also an active learning environment, students who were not Muslim were being taught about the celebration from their fellow peers from discussions on their table.
Also there were collaborative elements as some were writing Arabic calligraphy for others. At the end of the sessions everyone decided to gift their Eid cards to either friends, family or neighbours who celebrate.”
We have more Islamic art workshops running in the summer term. If your school is interested please do contact us to find out more!
