This summer, I had the incredible opportunity to be part of Sampad”s Summer School, where the theme was all about superheroes. But this wasn’t just about capes and superpowers; it was about helping children aged 7-10 discover the hero within themselves by embracing creativity, kindness, and courage. Over the week, I watched these young minds transform in ways that were truly inspiring. Here’s a glimpse into an experience that left a lasting impact on all of us.
Creativity Unlocked
From the start, creativity was at the heart of SHETA, our Super Hero Elite Training Academy. The children designed their own superhero identities, including names, powers, and costumes. They crafted masks and puppets and painted blocks that had previously been used in martial arts. This alongside supporting them when making kindness cards, was a wonderful reminder of how creativity helps us make sense of the world and express who we are.
Mastering the Art of Storytelling
Storytelling was a key focus throughout SHETA. In our drama dilemma sessions, the children acted out scenarios requiring them to make tough decisions. This hands-on approach showed them that being a hero isn’t always about having the right answer but about making the right choice. Their ability to reflect thoughtfully and creatively in these exercises was truly impressive.
The poetry workshop with Poet Laureate Iona Mandal was another standout moment. The children crafted an acrostic poem that reflected their superhero personas, revealing their deep connection with their roles. I was blown away by how thoughtful and reflective they could be when given the chance, demonstrating how storytelling helps them see themselves as part of a larger narrative.
Action and Adventure
No superhero week would be complete without action. Martial arts champion Chirag, a multi-world champion and Guinness World Record holder, introduced the children to the discipline, focus, and importance of practice—lessons that apply as much to life as to superhero training.
The excitement continued with a Bhangra competition, sparked by a fictional challenge from our “enemy” el Greco. Under the guidance of dancer Shriya, the kids learned a lively Bhangra routine that celebrated culture and rhythm.
The Heroic Finale
By the end of the week, the children had transformed from trainees into superheroes. Their final performance, showcasing their art, stories, and newly acquired skills, was a testament to their growth. The pride on their faces, and on the faces of their families, said it all.
