Sampad’s Schools Exhibition Case Study with Woodgate Primary

Today’s blog shares a wonderful case study from a Sampad Associate School. Woodgate Primary recently received our touring exhibition From City of Empire to City of Diversity, (included with all schools membership tiers). Displayed in their school hall, the exhibition was visited by almost every class, from pupils aged 5 to 11, as well as during a parents evening and for teacher training. Read on to know more and see the students’ brilliant work…

From City of Empire to City of Diversity is an exhibition of photographs and stories, created from The Dyche Collection – one of the most important photographic collections within the Birmingham Archives. The Dyche Collection documented migration to Birmingham after 1945, and the huge contribution made by those from the Commonwealth who settled in the city. You can read more about the origins of the exhibition here.

Our schools edition is accompanied by extensive resources, oral histories, storytelling and an interactive map, to equip teachers with the skills to confidently discuss the heritage of people from Birmingham.

“Engagement with the exhibition has been wonderful! Abby led the staff through a fantastic interactive introduction to the exhibition which really engaged the teachers and enabled them to deliver great sessions with the children.”

Mrs Debbie Colley, Head Teacher

During their exhibition slot, Woodgate Primary School made excellent use of the exhibition, sharing with classes from all year groups. It was used to inspire a varied range of creative work and exercises, across multiple different subject areas.

“I was fortunate enough to go along and join a Yr 5 class last week. The quality of conversations, the interest, curiosity and empathy was just wonderful. The class visited several times over the week and built their English Curriculum around the exhibition.”

Thank you to Woodgate Primary for such a brilliant response to the exhibition, for sharing such wonderful work from your students! If you’re interested in Sampad Associate Schools and want to know more, get in touch with learning@sampad.org.uk.
