The Commonwealth Symphony is a landmark project which celebrates cultural heritage and diversity on a global stage.
The Commonwealth Symphony is an original composition from the award-winning pianist and composer Rekesh Chauhan BEM, to be performed and recorded in January 2026 by the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra (CBSO) alongside guests artists from across the Commonwealth.
The composition celebrates the diversity of musical sounds from across the 56 Commonwealth Nations, blending classical and contemporary styles. It brings together the world-renowned CBSO with musicians, instruments and artistic approaches from across the Commonwealth.
As a partner on the Commonwealth Symphony, Sampad are providing an artist bursary through the project to Sandeep Kandola, a talented Sarangi player who will perform as part of the symphony. He is receiving mentoring and professional development as part of the project, from Rekesh Chauhan BEM and Sampad.
The Commonwealth Symphony is commissioned by The Queen Elizabeth II Commonwealth Trust, in partnership with the CBSO, Royal Birmingham Conservatoire and Sampad South Asian Arts & Heritage in conjunction with several collaborative organisations and artists.
