This October marked the third annual tour of our Diwali-themed school performance, Spirit of Light. The tour visited eight schools and reached over a thousand children, culminating in a special performance for teachers and arts educators at the Artists in Schools Conference at Birmingham Rep.
Spirit of Light exemplifies many of Sampad’s core values. Initially inspired by a request from Nishkam High School, this performance came to life through the vision of our Artistic Director, Piali Ray, and the collaboration of talented South Asian artists. Each year, the piece evolves to reflect the needs of the schools we work with, creating an experience that is both adaptable and deeply resonant.
The performance shares the Sikh story of Bandi Chhor Divas and the Hindu tale of Rama and Sita, offering an interactive celebration of Diwali. It features storytelling, dance, and live sitar accompaniment, inviting all young attendees to join in by lighting candles, clapping, and even singing along. The two performers expertly bring each character to life, while a Q&A session afterward engages students further, deepening their connection to the art and culture.
Feedback has been overwhelmingly positive. One student called it “the best performance I have ever been to,” and teachers have praised it as “important” and “memorable.”
Spirit of Light has become a cherished part of Sampad’s annual offerings for Associate Schools, and we look forward to bringing it back in October 2025. For advanced bookings and to be part of this celebration, please contact us.
