Freelance Artist Training with Sampad

By Naomi Awre, Learning Officer

The Sampad learning team had the joy of kicking off the year by running a two day Artists in Schools training programme thanks to funding from both the Foyle Foundation and John Feeney Charitable Trust.
Eight West Midlands based artists were selected from a range of disciplines plus the West Midlands Youth Dance Ambassador who we will be supporting over the coming months.

From the start you could sense the creativity, commitment and energy in the room. We were thrilled at how ready the group were to learn from and support each other. To quote a participant “It felt like a great group, it was a safe space and we connected well”.

Sessions included understanding the school environment, safeguarding (children and vulnerable adults), project management, marketing and included a half day interactive workshop on facilitation led by Rochi Rampal, an experienced drama facilitator from the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire. The other sessions were led by the Sampad team: Learning Manager Gillian, Projects and Programmes Coordinator James and Marketing and Communications Manager Harriet.

It was a jam-packed two days full of stimulating conversation, action and reflection and we enjoyed getting to know some of our artists a little better. If you’d like to know more about our artist training opportunities,

Feedback included:

“It was really great to refresh my knowledge, learn new things and share and learn from different practitioners who have vast experience. I think for freelancers these spaces and opportunities are really valuable to continue to develop and grow and network”

“Thank you all for the support and training. It was really informative and helped with my practice and as an arts educator too. Now looking forward to implementing it all in schools!” We hope we’ll be able to continue to offer training sessions such as these, as we want to continue to support and develop our freelance network. If you’re a freelance artist who practices South Asian arts to a professional level make sure you’re signed up to our mailing lists to hear about any future opportunities.
