We’re delighted to announce that Sampad South Asian Arts and Heritage have been awarded £211,164 from The National Lottery Heritage Fund for Virasat: Stories of South Asian Enterprise and Legacy, an 18-month heritage project exploring the remarkable stories of South Asian-founded businesses that have helped shape the West Midlands since the late 1960s.
Working with at least 14 long-established businesses with more than 50 years of history, Virasat will capture the memories and experiences of founders, families and employees through oral histories, while digitising photographs, documents and other materials that might otherwise be lost.
Bhavik Parmar, Executive Director of Sampad said: “I’m incredibly excited that, with support from The National Lottery Heritage Fund, we’ll be able to capture and celebrate the stories of South Asian entrepreneurs who overcame challenges to build successful businesses across the West Midlands. These are stories of resilience, ambition and contribution that deserve to be preserved and I hope they’ll inspire the next generation of entrepreneurs too.”
These stories will be brought to life through a touring exhibition, publication, learning resources, community events and creative interpretation, creating a lasting and publicly accessible record of South Asian enterprise, migration and community life across the region.
