Whether you’re seeking the soulful sounds of classical and contemporary Indian music or a vibrant afternoon of cultural performances, we have something for everyone!
Midday Mantra: Diwali Festival of Light

Join us at Symphony Hall for a dazzling afternoon of music as Shin Parwana, front-man of the legendary Bhangra band DCS, and the versatile Priti Kaur come together for a performance blending Bollywood classics, Punjabi ghazals, and folk tunes. Shin’s music draws on a wide range of influences—from South Asian greats like Mohammed Rafi and Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan to Western legends like The Beatles and James Brown. His unique style has earned him global acclaim as one of the pioneers of Bhangra music. Priti Kaur’s powerful vocals complement Shin’s dynamic performance, making this a must-see Diwali celebration.
Midday Mantra, a collaborative series between Sampad and B:Music, showcases the richness of South Asian musical traditions through a variety of classical, folk, and contemporary performances. This series provides a platform for world-class musicians to share their talents and cultural heritage, inviting audiences on a captivating journey of music and tradition.
Ujala: Diwali at The Exchange

A week later, the festivities continue with Ujala, a free, family-friendly event celebrating Diwali in partnership with The University of Birmingham. This vibrant afternoon includes something for everyone:
- Indian classical music by the acclaimed sitar player Akash Parekar
- A dynamic dance performance from Beeja Dance Company, inspired by the joyful experience of train travel through India
- Craft workshops, where participants can create traditional garlands and paint diya lamps
- A talk by Rishi Anand, Head of Research & Development at Dishoom, who will share insights on festive food traditions and his favorite dishes
- Poetry recitals in collaboration with Kriti UK, featuring powerful performances from selected poets
The meaning of Ujala—‘light’ in Hindi—captures the essence of this celebration. Come and immerse yourself in the rich sights, sounds, and tastes of Diwali, and enjoy an afternoon filled with music, dance, art, and community.
