We are thrilled to announce that the next Chai and Chat will feature the incredible Dr. Shamima Akhtar, Assistant Professor of Black and Asian British History at the University of Birmingham. Dr. Akhtar’s work focuses on anti-racist activism within Birmingham’s British Bangladeshi communities in the late 20th century, with a particular emphasis on women’s contributions.
Dr. Akhtar will share her personal journey of growing up in Birmingham, navigating challenges and forging an independent career rooted in her passion for history. Her story will strike a chord with many, illustrating the power of perseverance, community, and the pursuit of dreams.
Dr. Akhtar’s current project, Brumistan: Race and Resistance in Birmingham’s British Bangladeshi Communities in the 1970s and 80s, sheds light on the vital networks and anti-racist actions that shaped the city’s history. Alongside this, her forthcoming book, Exhibiting Irishness: Empire, Race and Nation, c. 1850–1970, explores the dynamic construction of Irish identity through national and global exhibitions.
With extensive experience working with cultural institutions, museums, and the Royal Historical Society, Dr. Akhtar is deeply committed to uncovering and presenting histories of race, migration, and empire. Her insights promise to spark meaningful conversations during this session.
Chai and Chat is a women-led initiative that fosters informal yet powerful discussions on diverse topics. This session provides a unique opportunity to hear from Dr. Akhtar, engage in thought-provoking dialogue, and enjoy the warmth of shared stories—with a comforting cup of chai in hand, of course.
