We are looking for a qualified, highly motivated and enthusiastic Archivist to join our National Lottery Heritage funded project, From City of Empire to City of Diversity: A Visual Journey.
The Archivist will be based in the Archives & Collections department at the Library of Birmingham.
Pay scale: £26999.00 – £33799.00
Working: 37.5 hours per week
Externally funded fixed-term contract for 62 weeks
Closing date: 29 March 2020.
Interview date: 1st April 2020
This partnership project, led by Sampad Arts & Heritage and working with Archives & Collections at the Library of Birmingham and the University of Birmingham, aims to increase access to a culturally diverse photography collection and promote its use for supporting learning, access to heritage, and community engagement.
You will be cataloguing the Dyche Collection, including photographic prints, documents and some artefacts, which relates to two professional portrait studios. In the 1950s, the portrait work shifted its focus as the first wave of migrants arrived in Birmingham from Africa, the Caribbean and Indian sub-continent, many of whom visited Dyche’s studio to have portraits made. By the time it ceased operating, the studio had inadvertently documented the development of the first and second generations of this wave of immigration, and helped to record an important phase in Birmingham’s history.
Building on your existing cataloguing experience and experience of supervising volunteers, you will work with Sampad to document and publicise this wonderful collection through a variety of engagement activities. You will be involved with a volunteer programme that will cover repackaging, digitisation and social media in order to publicise and report on the development of the project.
For informal enquiries, please contact Library of Birmingham’s Corinna Rayner on 0121 303 6779 or Sampad’s Executive Director, Sabra Khan on 0121 446 3271.
