We’re thrilled to be contributing to the UK’s first ever South Asian Heritage Month (SAHM).
South Asian Heritage Month runs from 18th July – 17th August and seeks to commemorate, mark and celebrate South Asian cultures, histories particularly the intertwined histories of the UK and South Asian communities and how South Asian cultures are present throughout the UK.
As part of this month long celebration we have programmed a series of online FREE events for you to plug in and join us in marking this momentous and joyful celebration of South Asian Heritage.

The Partition triggered the largest mass migration in human history, forcing the traumatic displacement of more than 14 million people as vast numbers of people moved across the border between the two newly formed states. In 2017 Sampad launched one of our most ambitious Heritage projects: The Partition Trail, which examined the social, cultural and emotional consequences of one of the most harrowing events in modern history, the Partition of India in 1947.
In this SAHM panel discussion, we will be led by:

The panellists will be discussing the huge implications and impacts of the partition on their lives. The panel will recount stories and share memories that are still as relevant and resonant as they were 73 years ago, including Ranjit and Naveed’s astonishing account of once being next door neighbours in India, to being in totally separate nations, and nationalities, after the partition on the 14th August 1947.

The Uday Shankar dance style creatively connects cultures, communities and inspires innovation. His dance partnership with Anna Pavlova, the Prima Ballerina from the west continues to be a shining model of practice where artists from distinct and diverse cultural backgrounds came together in a creative synergy. This collaborative process is part of a research and heritage project by Abundant Art UK led by Protima Chatterjee, supported by The Heritage Lottery Fund
This this wonderful SAHM webinar the panel will discuss the legacy of this dance partnership in the UK and India. and will include excerpts from the docu-film on the story of this legendary partnership.
The panel will be made up of dance specialists who have had a key part to play in this amazing project and/ or in the development of South Asian dance in the UK:

This event will also be screen a special excerpt of ‘Almora’ dance performance by members of Mamata Shankar Dance Company, choreographed by Mamata Shankar, in memory of her father Uday Shankar.
